Self-Study into Language and Literacy Education
One year ago today, if someone had asked me “what is language and literacy education?” I likely would have responded that it was learning to read and write. Or maybe more specifically I might have said that language and literacy education was learning to understand, make meaning of and communicate through text. If I was asked “what is ‘good’ language and literacy education?” I probably would have said that it was authentic use of texts and integrated with students' interests. I would have said that it helped to develop each child wherever they were as a writer or reader, but wouldn’t have had any ideas on how to achieve that.

While I still believe that these are certainly aspects of literacy, my understanding of literacy and how to provide these authentic experiences has been broadened to include a multitude of different types of literacy. Throughout the pages of this wiki I hope to address what these changes in my perspective have been and how I intend to use these changes to create better literacy experiences for the students in my classroom.
